Post SB XLVII-Commercial

Hopefully you caught at least a quarter of the Super Bowl on Sunday; however, if you did not, I still think you'll have no problem addressing the following questions.

1) Do you think that the Super Bowl has become too commercial/reliant upon the spectacle and not focused enough on the play on the field?  Explain.  Either way, what is the value of the game to cap the season?

2) Which commercial, in your opinion, was the best commercial of the night?  (If you did not watch them all, go to YouTube and find one.)

Worth 10 points total (5 pts. a piece)

  1. 1. I believe the Super Bowl is far from becoming reliant on the commercials. The majority of the people that watch the game do it to actually watch the game, the commercials are just a bonus. Whenever people take breaks from watching the game it is never during the actual game, it is always at a commercial. Most people would prefer to watch the game to see the play on the field rather than the commercials between breaks.
    2. My favorite commercial this year was the Taco Bell one. You never really see old adults sneaking out and going to clubs and going out to get food. That is what made this commercial original. People didn't expect it to be the way it was, and this why people will remember it.

  2. 1. I think the Super Bowl is become more commercialized because a lot of people only watch it for the commercials. I know I do.

    2. The m&m one were he sings "I Would Do Anything For Love" and all the women use him for food products.

  3. 1.) The super bowl is definitely changing in a bad way. It focuses on commercials and advertisements instead of playing the game. 2.) The Budweiser commercial with the horse. It thought it was touching how the horse went back to its owner

  4. 1.In my opinion they show way too many super bowl commercials now. Most of them are either stupid or just really bad. They still focus on the game itself more though. The commercials and how they make a big thing about them just because its the superbowl makes no sense to me, but the game itself still has more attention.
    2. The leon sandcastle commercial was my favorite for a few reasons. Deion sanders looks funny with an afro. The second reason is becasue it would be awesome to see deion Sanders play again. His speed amazes me and it would be great to see his superstar ability again.

  5. 1) I think the Super Bowl is sort of reliant on the commercials. A big majority of people watch the Super Bowl because of the big game, but others only watch it for the commercials. I believe the Super Bowl wouldn't be America's most watched television event if they didn't have the commercials. Without commercials, people wouldn't be as enthusiastic about it as it is now, and the NFL wouldn't be as successful without the Super Bowl commercials. The Super Bowl would still get a large viewing audience without the commercials, but won't come close to viewers who watch for the commercials.

2)I thought the best commercial was the Samsung commercial with Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen. Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd are two of my favorite actors, and it was really cool seeing two of my favorite actors in a commercial during the Super Bowl.Plus, I thought the jokes they made were really funny.

  6. 1. The Superbowl has become more of an American custom rather than a championship game. People are drawn to it because it has become a tradition. And, as a tradition, it has the power to immortalize its spectacles in pop culture. Most people probably don’t have a deep allegiance to the two teams playing, and few can remember stats from last year’s Superbowl, but the spectacles--the parts of the Superbowl that make us feel something--are remembered forever. This is not to say that the playing is irrelevant; in fact, some of the strongest emotions come from watching the game. The plays that surprise us, the advertisers who want to make us laugh, and the half-time shows that want to amaze us, if successful in their intents, are the big draws. The grand idea of the Superbowl intensifies the potential for something great to happen, and this anticipation is the big draw.
    2. From an advertising perspective, the Budweiser Clydesdale commercial was the best. It stood out as a touching commercial rather than a lame attempt at humor or sex appeal, and it was able to convey the idea of community in a unique way. More importantly, it was not a commercial made solely for 2013: it can stand the test of time. It is consistent with Budweiser’s other Superbowl commercials, yet did not seem repetitive. It was simple and not flashy, which brings people back down to Earth and allows them, if only for a minute, to reflect on the important things in life.

  7. 1) The Super Bowl has definitely become very commercialized but I don't see that as a bad thing. Football fans will always watch the Super Bowl no matter what, but other people are bought into watching the game because of all the commercials, the half time show, and the grand spectacle of it all. Yes, it's a football game and that's an important part of it but creating an event will turn a game that stops every 5 seconds into an occasion where millions gather round the TV to watch.
    2) I liked the Taco Bell commercial the most. It was the only commercial that made me laugh but didn't seem to force it. Also it was sort of relevant to what they were trying to sell when it showed them eating Taco Bell at the end. Other commercials were good like the one Oprah narrated but it had nothing to do with the trucks it was trying to sell.

  8. 1.) IMO, i think most people would watch the game even if there were no commercials. The Super Bowl is different than any game all season because you can sense the passion on the field because everyone wants the title of Superbowl Champion. I'm sure there are people that wouldn't watch the game but do because they enjoy the new commercials though.

2.) My favorite commercial was the Budweiser The Clydesdale: Brotherhood because I think it's cool how the horse remembers where it came from.

  9. 1. I think that the superbowl would lose a lot of viewers if they did not have all the commercials and the half time show. However I think there would still be a good amount of people watching the superbowl for the actual game, not only because they enjoy the game, but because it is a very american tradition.

    2. My favorite commercial was probably the Taco Bell, because I found it quite entertaining and I thought it was original.

  10. 1.) I feel like the Super Bowl is still the main focus, but the commercials have become way more significant. The commercials just keep the people tuned during the game because most people focus on something else once the commercials turn on. I feel like people most people would still watch the game even if there was no funny commercials, the Super Bowl is the biggest game every year in the US.
2.) My favorite commercial was the Taco Bell one because it was just so unexpected. I didn't really like the commercials over all this year though.

  11. Personally I believe that the super bowl has not become reliant on the commercials. The super bowl is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, sporting event in america. Millions of people tune in to watch the game and the NFL makes millions off it. I believe that the commercials are just a good bonus.

I think that over the past couple of years the commercials have gotten a lot worse and aren't very funny anymore but my favorite this year was the Taco Bell one.

  12. 1.) The Super Bowl is heading in the Wong direction because of becoming too commercialized. The game is now all about the hype leading up to it, the halftime show, the rumors, the commercials. It all plays a factor in making the game look less important. Year by year I see more and more attention being focused on the hype rather than the game itself
2.) The best commercial was the Tide commercial with the man who gets the holy stain and his wife washed it because she's a ravens fan

  13. 1.) The Super Bowl is and always will be the main focus. Commercials are there for entertainment, but I think that most people watch the Super Bowl for the pure enjoyment of the game. I also feel that Super Bowl commercials were way better a couple years ago than what they are now. Don't get me wrong, they are still entertaining and funny, but I remember watching the commercials as a kid and really enjoying them. Now, I don't even think "commercials" when February comes around and the Super Bowl is just around the corner;I think about who is going to be playing and how excited I am to watch the game. I feel that the Super Bowl is very valuable in capping off the season. It is one of the biggest sporting events in the U.S. and it is a very American tradition. No matter who is playing, whether you like them or not, people who enjoy football watch the game. Many people who don't enjoy football watch only one game, the Super Bowl. I feel that it is important because it recognizes the "best" team of the season, in a way.

2.) My favorite commercial this year, during the Super Bowl, was the Budweiser commercial. It was nothing like any other commercial and it was short, sweet, and simple. It basically showed the Clydesdale remembering the man who raised him and trained him. And on top of the that, the baby Clydesdale in that commercial was only a few days old! So sweet! :)

  14. The game is the most important part of the Super Bowl festivities. A lot comes along with super bowl whether it's commercials or the pre and post game parties or even the half time show. In my opinion commercials are one of the most overrated part of the super bowl. They really are not that good or funny. Every year you'll see maybe one or two that get a true laugh out of you. This year, that one commercial was the Taco Bell one. It was very true showing a bunch of intoxicated people going there. I don't remember it exactly but I believe that was the main point they were trying to get across.

  15. I've constantly heard people say they only watch the super bowl for the commercials. That makes me mad because the game of football is amazing and the super bowl is the most important game to watch. Sure some of the commercials are funny but this is crazy. The point of the superbowl is for the love of the game. Not the commercials. And the Taco Bell commercial was by far the best commercial this year.

  16. 1. the super bowl is cool n all its fun to watch especially this one you had finooks vs convicts a great matchup and one of helluva comeback from the 9ers i wish they one cause it woulda been cool to see scotty tolzien get a ring, but anyway i dont think the superbowl relies on the commercial the superbowl is the most watched event in America

    2. i really liked the old people in the taco bell commercial those are some bad motherfuckers rite there thats gonna be me when im an old man except i wont be put in a home cause if i do ill kill my kids for puttin me in such a horrifyin place

  17. I think that commercials make the superbowl more funn to wacth. It give the viewers something to look forward too and keep them entertain. I also think that commercials help are economy because it give businesses help to advertise their products in front of millions of viewers. I really liked the dorritors commercial where the goat screams because all the dorritors are gone.

  18. In past years the super bowl was far more centered on the commercials. but this year the commercials weren't all that impressive in all honesty which did add more attention to the game over all. The best of the sad lot this year was the taco bell "we are young" commercial was good because it was an effort to connect the two generations. It was also pretty hilarious.

  19. 1. I think the super bowl has always been about just the football to major football fans and will continue to be that way forever. But for others, the Super Bowl is definitely used more as a commercial event. It is major advertising for companies to get their products out to the public. The football aspect of the game is still the most important part. Companies have just gotten smarter over the years and have learned that their audience is much larger during the super bowl than during almost any other event.
    2. The best commercial was the Budweiser commercial. It played to the viewers' emotions which keeps the commercials memorable.

  20. PERNA via TESCHNER:
I think to a certain degree, people focus on commercials too much. But at the same time it also helps the game, because it keeps people tuned to the television at all times, so when the actual game comes back on, everybody's already ready to watch. At the same time, people really do not focus on commercials too much because, as funny as they may be, I think it would be impossible to overlook the Superbowl. The value of the Superbowl, being the last game of the year in a sport as big as Football, is astronomical. The final game of the year is the resultant of two teams that know how to win when it counts. Overall, the value of the Superbowl to cap the season is to the max since it's what millions of people have been waiting for.

  21. 1. i believe that the superbowl commericals are not affecting the superbowl games. the reason why is because some people enjoy watching the connercials then the game, and other people like the game over the commercials.
    2.samsung commercial. was really funny

  22. 1. I think that the commercials have become too much of the Super Bowl. Now there is such an expectation for amazing, funny, and original commercials every year that it somewhat takes a part away from the game. But there are some people who only watch the super bowl for the commercials and then there are people who watch it solely for the game.
    2. The Taco Bell commercial because it was unexpected and actually made me laugh.

  23. 1. I think that the super bowl has become to commercial reliant. It's fair to say that most people who watch the super bowl watch it because they love football and want to see a great game, however I feel in the past decade some people are only excited to see someone like Beyonce perform and thats the only reason they tune in. Which is not what the super bowl is about.
2.The go daddy commercial with the nerdy kid who makes out with that pretty girl it totally caught me off guard.

  24. 1. I think that the super bowl is WAY to reliant on commercials. I feel like most people that gather on super bowl Sunday just to sit around and get a good laugh. Not even for the game anymore.

2.I think that the Samsung commercial was hilarious!

  25. 1. I believe that the super Bowl is way advertised. I honestly feel bombarded by all these constant commercials. If i wanted to watch commercials or ads i would take a trip down I-90 and stop in the middle of the road and watch as every single one of the ads went on twice. But i clearly not grabbing my keys to make that trip. Therefor for when i am trying to watch an enjoyable game with my family i would love to do so, without being annoyed about what i should spend my money on next.
    2. I loved the taco bell commercial, I felt like it made me really think about the last time I had a taco bell run, all though i may not be in my 80's , It sheds light on the type of people you meet at taco bell at the middle of night. They're truly a breed on their own.
